Bush Bloopers
“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
– President Bush was referring to the well-known English idiom (which is certainly not just limited to Texas or Tennessee), “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” The phrase means that you should learn from your mistakes. If you allow people to take advantage of you repeatedly then it is your own fault.
I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe — I believe what I believe is right.”
– This is one of those Bush bloopers that is very confusing: we really are not sure what he is talking about here!
“Tribal sovereignty means that; it’s sovereign. I mean, you’re a — you’ve been given sovereignty, and you’re viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities.”
-This Bush blooper reveals that the President clearly didn’t quite know what tribal sovereignty was. Tribal sovereignty actually refers to the right of indigenous American tribes to rule and govern themselves.
“The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation’s history. I mean in this century’s history. But we all lived in this century. I didn’t live in this century.”
– Again, this is one of those Bush bloopers that really is incomprehensible!
“I’ve been in the Bible every day since I’ve been the president.”
– This is one of our favorite Bush bloopers. Perhaps this should have said, “I have read the bible every day since I became president.”
“This thaw – took a while to thaw, it’s going to take a while to unthaw”.
– How can something unthaw?
“And they have no disregard for human life”.
– This should have said, “regard for human life.” The use of the word “no” with “disregard” forms a double negative.
“I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office.”
– There are abductions taking place in the Oval Office right under President Bush’s nose? The sentence is structured incorrectly here. The president should have said, “I remember meeting, right here in the Oval Office, a mother of a child who was abducted by North Koreans.”
